Adult Movie Theatres in Honolulu

Honolulu’s adult cinemas were downtown on Hotel Street and out in Kaimuki, and all of them have closed. The rooms now are upstairs in Waikiki and behind a shop in Kalihi. Velvet Video has video booths behind its second-floor shop and is open until 2am on Friday and Saturday. The Pleasure Emporium has five solo theatre rooms behind its shop, at $30 a person for six hours in April 2026.

Hotel Street in the war

During the Second World War the brothels of Hotel Street, in Chinatown, ran under the Honolulu police. About 250 women were on the police register, listed as entertainers, photographed, fingerprinted and charged $1 a year, under Police Chief William Gabrielson.

By 1944 about 400,000 service personnel were in Hawaii, and 30,000 or more soldiers, sailors and war workers passed through the district on any given day.

Unwritten rules the police enforced. A woman on the register could not

  • Own a car
  • Own property
  • Wire money to the mainland without first asking the madam
  • Be seen on the street with any man
  • Go into bars or the better cafes
  • Go to dances

Jean O’Hara, who worked on Hotel Street, set down twenty of these rules in her 1944 book. They were never part of the registration.

The strike, and what they asked for

On 28 August 1942 the women went on strike. It lasted twenty-two days, and they picketed the police station and the military governor’s office.

They asked to live outside the district, to move about the city more freely and to be able to contact the mainland. They won the right to live outside the district and to go to the beaches.

In September 1944 the territorial governor, Ingram Stainback, asked the Police Commission to close the houses, and they were closed that month. Twenty-five years later, in 1969, an adult cinema opened at 32 North Hotel Street. It ran until the mid-2000s.
